I edited every one of these books! It’s a series of history and travel books for kids. Whew. It’s been a busy summer.

Just a quick update on some books I’ve read:

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides: Really great thriller. Better than I was expecting.

A Voyage for Madman by Peter Nichols: True story about an around-the-world boat race. Not my thing, but interesting.

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton: I wanted to love it, but I didn’t. It was too much. I like the premise, but I just got bogged down by it.

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd: Based on a true story about a white woman’s quest to abolish slavery. Good, but white people writing about a slave just icks me out. Half the book was from a slave’s perspective and it just felt wrong.

The Bat by Jo Nesbo: The first book in the Harry Hole series. Great start to the series. Can’t wait to read more.

After Dark, My Sweet by Jim Thompson: They really just don’t write books like this anymore. The language was very dated, but in a fun way.

Firestarter by Stephen King: One of his I hadn’t read. Really great. He writes a young girl very well. Another excellent King book.

The Vanishing Season by Dot Hutchison: The last book in the Collectors series. The first one, The Butterfly Garden, was a great one. I was glad to revisit and finish this one up.

Blind Rage: A True Story of Sin, Sex, and Murder in a Small Arkansas Town by Anita Paddock: I’ve read a lot of true crime. This was was good, but not outstanding.

Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk: I think I’m too old for these books. I really liked them in my 20s, but now they just wear me out.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield: A great little story within a story mystery. Kept me guessing.

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer: I liked this one so much better than the first, Cinder. I’m looking forward to the third in the series.

Chernobyl 1:23:40 by Andrew Leatherbarrow: Just okay on this one. Half the story was about the author’s visit to Chernobyl, which I just didn’t want to read about. I was much more interested in the event.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell: Reread on this one. Loved it even more the second time.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell: Also reread. See above link for review. Loved it.

Dark Age by Pierce Brown: Definitely the most graphic of the Red Rising books. Somehow I haven’t reviewed any of these books, but I HIGHLY recommend the series.

No Stone Unturned by Steve Jackson: True story about how NecroSearch was founded and how they solved a few crimes. Really fascinating.

Warcross by Marie Lu: I loved her Legend series, but felt The Young Elites was nowhere near as good. Actually annoyed me. However, this one was great.

The Girls by Emma Cline: top 5 of the year for me. It was beautifully written. A fictional take on the Charles Manson family.
